Here Comes Your Man, Remco Raveel

July is proving to be a month of joy and redemption for the Spanish people. The men's national football team has won the FIFA World Cup in North America, thanks to a goal scored by a player who had been praying that his goal against Saudi Arabia wouldn't be disallowed. Millions of people on the streets have put aside everything that divides our society and have celebrated together to the sound of songs as varied as "Un beso y una flor" by Nino Bravo and "Superestrella" by Aitana.



Pegaso didn't want to be left out. Despite a disappointing first half of the season, sitting in sixth place in the Formula 1 Constructors' Championship, both Jan Bonmatí and Remco Raveel were presented with a golden opportunity in Singapore. Free practice in changing conditions, qualifying in the wet and a dry race, on a circuit where overtaking is difficult. Ultimately, it is no coincidence that they achieved their best results of the season on twisty circuits such as Monte Carlo and Hungaroring, with a car that falls far below the standards of its immediate predecessors.

And so it proved. Amidst a turbulent Q3 for the top teams, Pegaso was the only team whose two drivers made no mistakes, allowing them to start in 2nd and 5th place. Given that both drivers' strength lies in their race pace, keeping things simple should make it relatively straightforward to secure a strong result.



The first surprise came on the first lap. Raveel got off to a better start than pole-sitter Reckziegel, attempting unsuccessfully to overtake him at the start. However, Reckziegel surprisingly went off the track at turns 16-17 in sector 3, allowing Remco to take the lead. This didn't last long, and the Pegaso driver was brought back down to earth on lap 6, when he was overtaken by Vidmar's Porsche, which was 6 points faster than his own. The Belgian driver tried to keep up with him, staying within DRS range for 15 laps.

Behind him, Bonmatí remained in the top five, even moving up to fourth place halfway through the first stint after overtaking Zakrajšek, before putting up a fierce defence against the attacks from Starostachev's Toyota.

From the second stint onwards, everything pointed to a quiet race where they just had to keep an eye on the rear. However, on lap 47, António Mateus' Aston Martin crashed into the barriers at Turn 5, bringing out the Safety Car. It was then that Starostachev managed to pull off an overcut and overtake Bonmatí, pitting one lap later than him.

Once the Safety Car had left, the miracle happened. Vidmar came out of Turn 3 poorly, allowing Saint-Germain and Raveel to overtake him. And on the next straight...

"And here comes your man, Remco Raveel, ceasing to desist, giving his goodbye and driving his car into the lead of the race!!"

With 10 laps to go, a Pegaso car was once again leading the race. In the first Grand Prix in which the two stars were displayed on the side of the rear wing of the 266/3, as a tribute to the World Cup triumph, Raveel demonstrated his extraordinary racecraft, completing ten flawless laps to secure the second victory of his racing career and the fourth in the Escudería's history. Meanwhile, Jan Bonmatí finished in sixth place.



The result in Singapore allows Pegaso to consolidate its fifth place in the Constructors' Championship and pull away from McLaren, its closest rival, with 129 points to 98. Meanwhile, Remco moves up to eighth place in the Drivers' Standings with the sixth-fastest car, whilst Jan climbs one place to twelfth.
