Exclusive Interview: Rafa Massiara — The Next Star From Indonesia
At just 18, Rafa Massiara is stepping up to the next challenge: car racing in the highly competitive Rookie Series. We caught up with the young driver to talk about his aspirations, and what lies ahead in this exciting new chapter.
How does it feel to be balancing such a big life step with your racing career?
It’s definitely a challenge. I’m currently preparing for college while managing my racing commitments, so finding the right balance between school, training, and travel has been tough — but it’s all part of chasing the dream.
When did you first realize racing was more than just a hobby for you?
I remember finishing 20th in a club karting race one weekend, then getting an F at school that Monday — but somehow, the race result upset me way more. That’s when I realized how much racing meant to me, and that I cared about it on a different level.
Tell us about the Rookie Series — what makes this championship exciting for you?
It’s a chance to race against the best rookies from around the world. Every race is an opportunity to prove myself and show that I belong at the top of this new generation of drivers.
What goals have you set for your first season in cars?
Right now, my main goal is to be consistently competitive and gain as much track time as possible. I want to learn, adapt quickly, and lay the foundation for the next steps in my career.
How involved is your family in your racing career?
It started in a pretty unexpected way — my uncle sent me €500,000 after I told him I wanted to start racing seriously. That moment changed everything, and since then my family has been incredibly supportive.
What are your hobbies outside of racing?
I love sports in general — I play tennis, golf, and occasionally go bowling. It keeps me fit, but more than that, sports are a great way to meet people and build connections off the track.
How do you balance racing with a normal teenage life?
Honestly, it’s not easy. Some of my friends made another group without me because I missed too many meetups. Now, with plans to move to Europe for racing, I’m basically starting over — new place, new people, and building a new life from zero.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Like every driver, my dream is to race in the Formula 1 World Series. It’s a tough path, but my manager and I are fully committed. We’re working hard to make the jump to Formula 3 next season — currently focused on securing the funding to get there.
What message would you like to send to your fans and supporters?
To all my fans — especially those back home in Indonesia — thank you for the support. I’ll do my best to carry our flag with pride and represent our country on the international stage.
With a fierce determination, a stong support system, and eyes set firmly on the future, Rafa Massiara is ready to make his mark in the Rookie Series and beyond. As he take his first steps into the world of car racing, one thing is clear; this is the beginning of a very exciting journey.
